World sugarcane growing areas
Global sugar cane planted
areas decreased to 121 billion rai in 2000, from 122 billion
rai in 1999. Brazil is the world's largest sugar cane producer,
responsible for around 25 percent of total world production,
followed by India, Pakistan, China and Thailand. Total Brazilian
sugar cane production in 2000 stood at 127.8 billion tons, an
increase from 127.5 billion tons in 1999. However, Colombia
has a higher yield of 14,800 kilograms per rai, compared with
10,795 kilograms per rai in Brazil.
