Sugar production
More than 60 percent of the world's
sugar production is from sugar cane, with the balance coming
from sugar beet. Sugar manufacturing is a highly seasonal industry,
with each season lasting around 6-18 weeks for beet and 20-32
weeks for cane. Production can be broken down into two distinct
phases; processing and refining.
Sugar processing is generally done as close as possible to the
growing areas.
