Major Importers
Major importers of fresh and frozen
tuna
In 2000, the total world fresh and frozen tuna trade stood
at 1,399,000 tons, down 20 percent from the previous year,
while the world import value stood at US$ 3,055 million, down
more than 8 percent from the previous year. Japan is the biggest
importer of fresh and frozen tuna, accounting for about 23.3
percent of the total trade. In 2000, Japan imported 390,000
tons of fresh and frozen tuna, up 8.5 percent from 1999. Taiwan
is by far the main supplier of frozen tuna to Japan. Fresh
tuna imports into Japan have expanded in recent years. Fresh
tuna is flown into the country, with Indonesia as the main
supplier of this type of product.
Thailand is the second biggest fresh and frozen tuna importer,
representing nearly 25 percent of the world tuna trade.
The total trade in fresh and frozen tuna peaked (in terms
of quantity) in 1999 at 1,750,000 tons. Catching restrictions
led to less trade in 2000, when total trade went down to 1,400,000
tons.
