Major
exporter of fresh and frozen tuna 
Taiwan is by far the main fresh and frozen tuna trader at
431,000 tons in 2000, accounting for 33 percent in terms of
quantity, up 7.7 percent from the previous year. France was
second, representing 11 percent of the total fresh and frozen
tuna trade, up 18 percent from the previous year. The top
five major tuna exporters in terms of quality were Taiwan
(431,000 tons), France (144,000 tons), Spain (138,000 tons),
Korea (99,000 tons) and Colombia (66,000 tons).
Major
importer of fresh and frozen tuna 
In 2000, the total world fresh and frozen tuna trade stood
at 1,399,000 tons, down 20 percent from the previous year,
while the world import value stood at US$ 3,055 million, down
more than 8 percent from the previous year. Japan is the biggest
importer of fresh and frozen tuna, accounting for about 23.3
percent of the total trade. In 2000, Japan imported 390,000
tons of fresh and frozen tuna, up 8.5 percent from 1999. Taiwan
is by far the main supplier of frozen tuna to Japan. Fresh
tuna imports into Japan have expanded in recent years. Fresh
tuna is flown into the country, with Indonesia as the main
supplier of this type of product.
Major
exporter of canned tuna 
In 2000, total canned tuna exports
stood at 785,000 tons, up 8.2 percent from 1999 and up 25.5
percent from 1995 in terms of quantity. On the other hand,
the value of the canned tuna trade dropped about 8 percent
from US$ 1,826 million in 1999 to US$ 1,682 million in 2000.
It resulted from a sharp decline in the unit value of canned
tuna.
Major
importer of canned tuna 
In 2000, total world canned tuna
imports stood at 736,000 tons, slightly increased by 2 percent
from 1999, and sharply increased by 36 percent from 1995.
The US is the main canned tuna importer in terms of both quantity
and value.
