The export market for Thai octopus (live, fresh or chilled)
is smaller than that for cuttlefish or squid. Japan remains
the biggest importer. However, the total export volume of octopus
to Japan dropped 58 percent to 29,382 kilograms in 2001, from
70,562 kilograms in 2000. Moreover, the overall export quantity
of live, fresh or chilled octopus from Thailand decreased 71
percent from 200,856 kilograms in 2000 to 58,162 kilograms in
2001. It is estimated that the situation will improve in 2002,
because the export volume reached 98,970 kilograms between January-August
this year, greater than the total export volume in 2001.
