According to the FAO, Japan is the world's biggest squid catcher
and consumer. Japan imported 28,632,057 kilograms of cuttlefish
and squid products from Thailand in 2000 and 28,633,151 kilogram
in the following year. The value increased from 7,054 million
baht in 2000 to 7,344 million baht in 2001. Italy is the second
biggest market for Thai cuttlefish and squid. Italy produced
an average of only 13 million tons between 1990 –1998, whereas
the average volume produced in Japan reached 568 millions tons.
However, the export volume dropped slightly from 17,743,411
kilograms in 2000 to 17,764,505 kilograms in 2001. Total export
volumes and values have increased. In 2000, 70,580353 kilograms
of cuttlefish and squid (valued 10,739 million baht) were exported
to Italy. This increased slightly to 70,875,205 kilograms (valued
at 11,298 million baht) in 2001. However, the export volume
between January – August 2002 decreased about 3,392,041 kilograms
compared with the same period last year
