According to the Thai Customs Department, exports of cuttlefish
and squid (live, fresh or chilled) have decreased in volume
and value. In 2000, Thailand exported 518,019 kilograms of cuttlefish
and squid (live, fresh or chilled), valued at 28.4 million baht.
In the following year, exports slightly decreased to 472,756
kilograms, valued at 22.4 million baht, showing a 8.7 percent
decrease in volume and a 21 percent decrease in value.
It is surprising that Malaysia is
the biggest export market for Thai cuttlefish and squid rather
than Japan. 342,025 kilograms of cuttlefish and squid (valued
9.7 million baht) were exported to Malaysia in 2001, an increase
from 330,300 kilograms (valued at 8.5 million baht) in 2000,
and the figures are expected to increase further in 2002.
Total exports of cuttlefish and squid (live, fresh or chilled)
from January – August this year were 323,798 kilograms (valued
at 16.6 million baht), an increase from 317,546 kilograms
in the same period of 2001. Malaysia continues to be a biggest
export market for this type of product.
