US Imports
In 2001, total US shrimp imports stood at 400,337 tons, up
16 percent from the previous year, while import value stood
at US$3,626 million, down more than 3 percent from the previous
year. The US is the most important export market for Thai
shrimp. In 2001, the US imported 136,078 tons of shrimp from
Thailand, up nearly 8 percent from 2000. Thailand is the largest
exporter of shrimp to the US market, representing nearly 34
percent of total US shrimp imports in 2001.
Since the beginning of 2002, US imports from Thailand has
been on a downward trend. Imports from Thailand during the
first half of 2002 totaled 47,660 tons, worth $393.4 million,
down 6.7 percent in terms of volume and down 25.5 percent
in terms of value when compared with the same period in 2001.
Total US imports during the first half of 2002 totaled 170,659
tons, up 15 percent from the same period in 2001. Import value
stood at $1,325.5 million, up 6.6 percent from the same period
last year.
