World Major Importers
The US and Japan are the two largest
importers of shrimp in the world, with imports totaling
400,337 tons and 245,049 tons, respectively, in 2001.
US imports have been increasing steadily over the past
few years, rising from 264,206 tons in 1996 to 400,337
tons in 2001, while 2001's imports are up 16 percent from
the previous year. At the same time, Japanese imports
have been falling slightly during the past years, dropping
from 288,000 tons in 1996 to 245,049 tons in 2001.
