Marine
& Culture
Total world shrimp catch amounted to 3.2
million metric tons (live weight) in 1999 with 24% farm -raised
and 76% percent wild.
Major shrimp fishing nations are China,
India and Indonesia. Marine catch, however, does not vary
much from year to year as fishing grounds are limited by each
country's EEZ.
Shrimp farming, on the other hand, has been growing by leaps
and bounds. In Thailand alone, farmed shrimp supply increased
from 8, 000 metric tons in the 1980s to over 200,000 metric
tons in the 1990s.
Industry sources* reported 400% growth from 1985 to 1995
for shrimp farming, said to be the fastest for any sector
of the aquaculture industry. Experts , including the Food
and Agriculture Organization, predict that farmed shrimp may
account for as much as 50% of the total world supply by the
end of 2000.
