Ginger export
According to the Thai Customs Department, total ginger exports
around the world were 24.06 million tons in 2001, showing
a decrease from 27.78 million tons in 2000. In 2001, global
ginger exports were valued at 496 million baht, a decline
from 736 million baht in 2000.
In 2000 and 2001, Pakistan and Japan were
the biggest ginger exporters in the world. 7.5 million tons
of ginger was exported from Pakistan, which earned 87.66 million
baht for the country in 2000. In 2001, Pakistan ginger exports
increased in volume and value to 9.7 million tons at 90.15
billion baht. Each year, Japan exports a large amount of ginger
to foreign markets. In 2000, 7.9 millions tons of ginger from
Japan were exported. It is surprising that Japan’s exports
in 2000 were only a little bigger than Pakistan’s (7.5
million tons) but earned 275.35 million baht, while Pakistan
earned only 87.66 million baht. In 2001, Pakistan increased
ginger exports to 9.7 million tons, compared with 7.5 million
tons in 2000. And the value was 90.15 million baht. The value
of ginger exports from Japan in 2001 reached 164 million baht
despite a volume of only 4.7 million tons, less than the export
volume from Pakistan.
From January to July 2002, total
world production of ginger was around 15.52 million tons,
valued at 255 million baht.
