According to the FAO, ginger production is looking bright, because harvesting areas and production has increased since 1999, and is estimated to enlarge more in 2002. The harvesting areas of ginger in the world were 310,100, 319,751 and 321,732 hectares in 1999, 2000 and 2001, respectively. Overall production of ginger around the world has also increased. Production was 835,173 tons in 2001, compared with 812,372 tons in 2000 and 775,717 tons in 1999. Nigeria is the world’s biggest ginger producer. In 1999, Nigeria harvested 166,800 hectares of ginger across the country and the area of cultivation extended to 174,000 hectares in 2000 and 2001. This is because of a high demand from both domestic and foreign markets. India is another important producer. Harvesting areas across India have remained stable at 80,000 hectares from 1999–2001. Producing areas in China have also enlarged each year. 20,700 hectares were used for ginger cultivation in 2001, compared with 17,750 and 19,170 hectares in 1999 and 2000, respectively.

Although the statistics show that the biggest ginger harvesting area was in Nigeria, the largest production of supplies came from India. Total production of ginger in Nigeria in 2001 was 90,000 million tons, unchanged from 1999. Meanwhile, overall ginger production in India increased from 270,000 million tons in 1999 and 2000 to 275,000 million tons in 2001, and is estimated to increase further next year. Although the ginger cultivation area in China is not as large as in Nigeria, China’s productivity is greater. The amount of Chinese ginger has increased gradually each year. Total ginger production in China was 201,128 million tons in 1999, 228,056 million tons in 2000 and 240,000 million tons in 2001.
