Domestic price
of spices
Spice prices in Thailand change every
year, depending on buyer demand and fresh supplies available
in the market. The price of dried garlic has decreased gradually
since 1999, and it is estimated that the price will be lower
this year because of weak demand. In 2001, the price of dried
garlic was 20.07 baht per kilogram, a drop from 28.35 baht
per kilogram in 1999 and 24.26 baht per kilogram in 2000.
Although pepper is an important spice for export, the prices
of both black and white pepper have dropped each year. Black
pepper was 107 baht per kilogram in 2001, compared with 173
and 175 baht per kilogram in 1999 and 2000, respectively.
White peppers sold at 174 baht per kilogram in 2001, a decrease
from 269 and 257 baht per kilogram in 1999 and 2000, respectively.
The decreased prices show the gloomy situation of Thai spices.
