has its origin in South America where it has got the name
"pina" meaning pine cone in Spanish which the fruit
vaguely resembles. The English added "apple" to
associate it with juicy delectable fruits. South American
Indians called it "ananas" meaning "fragrant excellent
fruit" which became the basis for its scientific name "Ananas
Cosmosus". In Thailand, where its largest amount of production
takes place, the fruit is called "Supparot".
