Coconuts
are subject to numerous fungal diseases, bacterial infections,
and other diseases. Lethal yellowing is the most important
disease of coconut. It can kill a 100% of thousands of
palm trees and endanger virtually all of the tall coconut
palms. Thai coconut occasionally attacked by 2 diseases.
They are Damping-off, caused by the fungus Pythium spp.
and Leaf spots diseases, caused by Helminthosporium sp.
Coconut trees are also attacked by numerous nematodes
and some insect pests, the most damaging insect being
the black beetle or rhinoceros beetle (Oryctes rhinoceros),
which damages buds, thus reducing nut yield, and breeds
in decaying refuse. Diseases and pests of a particular
area should be considered and local agent consulted as
to how to deal with them.
