According to the FAO, Vietnam produced
1.7-1.9 million tons of tapioca in 2000/2001. Tapioca cultivation
covers 210,000 – 220,000 hectares (1,312,500 – 1,375,000 rai)
and the tapioca output is 8.31 tons/hectare.
However, most tapioca products are used
in the domestic market, while the rest are exported to foreign
markets such as China and South Korea. The output of tapioca
starch in 2000/2001 was 200,000 tons; 140,000 tons were used
in the domestic market while 60,000 tons were exported. Moreover,
Vietnam can export tapioca to China via their border and get
a 50% duty reduction.

Although Vietnam produces only 2-3
million tons, or 10-15 percent, of Thailand’s output, it has
high potential to produce more because of favorable weather
and soil which are perfect for tapioca cultivation, low investment
costs, government support, low labor costs and attractive incomes
for the planters. Moreover, the government supports cultivation
of new varieties such as KM94, Rayong 5, KM 98 or KU50, which
has high productivity per hectare.
There are now 21 tapioca factories
in Vietnam, producing 1,900 tons per day, as a result of government
support and foreign investment from Thailand, Malaysia and
South Korea. And it is expected that within the next 2 years,
these factories will produce more than 300,000 tons of tapioca
starch per year.
Indonesia
Indonesia produced 15-16 million tons
of tapioca per year between 1996 and 2001. Its main cultivation
areas are Sumartra, Chawa and Sulavesee. Sumartra Island produces
about 70 percent national output, but most of it is used in
the domestic market for the food industry, paper industry,
and Monosodium glutamate (MSG).
Cassava can be planted in Indonesia all
year round, and the harvest is from October to March. The
amount of cassava from commercial cultivation is about 30
tons per hectare (5 tons per rai), and the investment cost
is about 2,500,000 rupiah per hectare. Output from commercial
cultivation by small-scale farmers is 20 tons per hectare
(3 tons per rai) and investment is 2,000,000 rupiah per hectare.
40 tapioca starch factories are located
in Lompong province and produce 4,000–5,000 tons per day,
while some small factories located in other provinces produce
only 1,000 – 2,000 tons per day.
Indonesia produces about 1.2–1.3 million
tons of tapioca starch per year, but it has been reported
that it no longer wants to use it for export, because domestic
demand increases 10 percent every year.
