& Soybean Meal Price Trend
World Soybean Meal Prices
The fluctuation in soybean meal prices
follow the same pattern as the soybeans, except that the peak
soybean prices in 1993/94 were not as apparent in soybean
meal prices. In 1994/95, the drop in soybean prices also affected
the soybean meal market, particularly the United States soybean
meal prices which dipped more than 30 per cent from the previous
year. Because soybeans and soybean meal were widely traded,
a fluctuation of price in one country would definite impacted
those of others.

After a slight dip in 1994/95, world soybean
meal prices shot up the following year, in response to the
higher demand of soybeans in world market. The trend peaked
in 1996/97 at US$ 257 - $ 289 /ton, also the same peak period
for soybeans. However, the soybean meal prices hit a downward
spiral after that and reached their record low at $ 130
- $ 153 /ton in 1998/99. The trend for 2000/01 will improve,
following the increase in soybean meal in animal feed.
