World Soybean Meal Trade Share

Two major players in global soybean meal exports are Brazil and Argentina. In 1996/97, Brazil was the world's largest exporter of soybean meal, with 31.3 per cent or 10.66 million metric tons of the world's export volume. Argentina, on the other hand, followed closely behind with 25.5 per cent or 8.68 million metric tons. However, since 1997/98, Argentina has taken over Brazil as the world's largest soybean meal exporter. In 2000/01, Argentina will continue to be the biggest soybean meal exporter, with 36 per cent share or 14.40 million metric tons of the world's total export volume. Brazil, the second largest, will follow behind with 25 per cent or 10 million metric tons of the total. The Unites States will remain in the third place, with a projected 16 per cent share or 6.53 million metric tons exported soybean meal. The U.S. soybean meal exports has not grown very much since 1996, with only 3 per cent expansion in the export share.

On the contrary, the globla soybean meal import shares are more evenly distributed among many players. In 1996/97, China had the largest soybean meal import share, with 10.5 per cent or 3.6 million metric tons of the world's total import volume. After 1997/98, however, China's soybean meal import plunged more than 66 per cent from 4.2 to 1.4 million metric tons. In 1998/99, France emerged as the world's biggest importer of soybean meal, with 11 per cent growth in its import volume from 3.65 million metric tons in 1997/98 to 4.11 million metric tons. France is projected to remain the largest soybean meal importer in 2000/01, with a share of 10 per cent of the total world import volume, while China's share of the pie will simply disappear, with less than 2 per cent or 700,000 metric tons of imported soybean meal. Instead, Spain and the Netherlands will become the world's second and third largest soybean meal importers, with 7 and 6 per cent or 2.7 and 2.39 million metric tons of the total import volume, respectively.
