Trends
in World Soybeans & Soybean Meal Trade
Global exports of oilseeds will decline
6 per cent in 2000/01, including the soybean exports which
accoutned for nearly 75 per cent of total oilseed trade. The
growth in soybean imports for other destinations cannot offset
the expected decline in China's soybean imports. According
to the United States Department of Agriculture, world soybean
trade reached its peak in 1999/00, with over 47 million metric
tons in trade volume. In 2000/01, however, the predicted trade
voluem would fall nearly 1 million metric ton to 46.62 million
metric tons.

On the other hand, global soybean meal trade
will continue to increase steadily, with nearly 15 per cent
growth rate since 1996/97, in which a total of 34.30 million
metric tons was traded. In 2000/01, the USDA has predicted
that the global soybean meal trade volume will raise to
slightly over 40 million metric tons. Two factors that encourage
soybean meal trade are low prices and the use of soybean
meal as a substitution for protein source in animal feed.
